Green Ivory Chinese /Macao Export Bust Figural Chess Set – late 19th Century (circa 1820)
European side stained green and the Chinese side ivory.
Kings and queens as European monarchs (maybe depicting George III as King and Queen Charlotte), bishops as clerics or mandarins, knights as horses‘ heads, rooks as turrets carved with pagodas with flags (Union Flag), pawns wearing helmets & caps, the chessmen carved with intricate floral and foliate motifs, all raised on carved circular gadrooned bases.
The King 11,5 cm high – The Pawn 6 cm high
Antique Victorian Leuchars Carton Pierre Chess Board 19th Centura (circa 1949-1870)
A fine carton pierre & leather board stamped “Leuchars Piccadilly” the exterior with carton Pierre decoration
in the Neogothic style, the inerior with green & cream with gilt highlights, brown purple borders.
These fine boards were first made by Leuchars of London to compliment the Jaques chess sets.
