Northern Indian Polychrome Muslim Ivory  Chess Set on a 18th Century Indian Kashmiri Nard Board

 

Ivory Chess Set – 18/19th Century:

One side stained red and the other side green with a fine gilt heightened floral decoration.
Each figure has a white „lid“ with a small knob on top.
They were not strictly for Muslim use but the term has become used as a generic label for this abstract type.

The King 4cm high – The Pawn 2 cm high

 

Indian Nard & Chess Board – 18th Century:

The two-piece wooden rectangular board originates from the Northern India, probably from Kashmir.
One side for chess, the other side for Nard, in two section, decorated with hand painted extensive
polychrome floral motifs within cartouches and a painted gray border.
The coloring of the front and back is kept in the typical Indian colors green and red.

50 cm long – 39 cm wide – 2,8 cm high – Squares 4 x 3,5 cm
